Now why aren't we seeing more of these? I mean aside from the free dental work aspects, the head first slide always works so well in the movies...so dramatic!

I'm all about the head first slide, mostly because my knees are completely destroyed, but also because DC's constant watering of our fields gives them that slip and slide aspect.

Not to mention that we had those sprinklers going the last Sunday we had games...

The tough part is remembering to grab the base as you overslide it.

The head first slide is not totally lost.. and from the looks of it, the catchers in the league (scott and I) are the ones still doing it. It's actually the only type of slide I will do and just for the reason Scott mentioned in the last post.. the bases move too easily and you can find your foot off the bag and get nailed out..
although more dangerous, I find it easier to dodge a poorly positioned baseman going in head/hands first instead of taking their legs out from under them when i go feet first.

I agree with everything in the previous post except that I'm the Shortstop on our team, Michael is our catcher.
Also depends on the field you play on, I think we luck out there, Marie Reed in Adams Morgan is a hardpack of very little grass, a lot of rocks, and occasional glass shards....I'd only slide if the game is on the line there. Even the Ellipse was in rough shape at the end of last season.

Damn that field sounds like its a disaster area. Do players just bur their uniforms at season's end after using that field?

I've yet to see a slide on that field...though I have seen a supposed scar from sliding a previous season.
Interesting thing is that the approach from the mound isnt smooth either, so you never really know where the ball will go, even if its a straight pitch. I'm sure some of the VA fields are nice, but we must have the nicest fields in DC...and thanks to Shelby, soon to be the most accurately measured fields as well.

Hey Taylor - props to that guy on Team Keg who went into 1st base head first. It was some good form, even how he took out the cone (and almost the 1st base ump)...

I gotta give it to Sack Lunch too.. One of their Potato Chips did the head first slide into home plate.. for no reason other than to just do it .. cause the ball was no where near him. such a trooper
--NO MORE DOUBLE POSTING FOR ME-- oh and stevie.. thank you for posting here.. I was looking for this post, but saw the recent 10 posts and voila.. didn't have to search for it =) I <3 you

And don't forget about Kim's head first slide/trip in between first and second base....that was one of the most graceful things I've ever seen!!

I have to say the only reason I did a head first slide into first base was because Don was coming at me like a freight train.. that is one guy you don't want to get in the way of. Well that and I like dive and roll around on the ground.. brings more drama to the game..
I will agree that there were two highlights of the game..
1. Kim totally eating in the middle of 1st and 2nd, I know she doesn't read these boards but I can go down to her office and make fun of her right now..
2. Megan making a miraculous catch at first to prevent 3 scores from running and thus winning the game for the balls

Megan's catch was indeed impressive.
Kim's stop, drop and roll was indeed embarassing. I can only think of one other instance where someone has self-wiped that bad this season.
But don't forget to give Rob props for his cart wheels to home plate with what would be the winning run.
