Hi --
Is anyone opposed to DC Star collecting donations to send for Hurricane Katrina relief? I am sure I am not the only one in DC Star who knows people who were personallly affected. It obviously wouldnt be a mandatory thing, but maybe anyone who wanted to could donate by next weeks game and we could send it on to the Red Cross? Just a thought.

blueangel -
This sounds like a good idea...I have forwarded this to our charity team to think about. We'll bring any ideas to next week's festivities -- the Mid-Season party on 9/10 and games on 9/11.
Thanks!

That's a great idea. I have family on the North Shore. Such a disaster... I'll help any way I can.

A friend of mine is researching organizations local to New Orleans who are accepting donations. I'd be happy to post her findings in case people want to donate to smaller, less bureaucratic organization (or if they simply want more choices).
Also, not to dilute our charity activities, but I was wondering if people would go for having an event to raise money or collect supplies for Katrina victims...

I would definitely be down for that. Do you think that maybe Irish Times would team with us on this?

This came from another organization that I'm involved with:
400 families will be coming to DC (from New Orleans) on Monday to stay in the Armory. They stressed that their biggest needs at this time are bottled water and anything that would constitute a "care package." For example, toothbrushes, toothpaste, blankets, undergarmets, soap, etc. These items can be brought to the First District office located at 415 4th St SW.
I'm actually sort of excited to spend some time putting together a couple of care packages...

Can we find out if WAKA will match donations? Wouldn't hurt to ask since they are no longer a non-profit...
