You still owe me an explanation of "the spread" Mr. Marvin!

UVA @ Georgia Tech -16
Virginia is starting a rookie QB on national TV during Grey's Anatomy. GT looked great against ND, but failed to cover against Troy depite a 3 TD fourth quarter. Lot of blitzes on GT's part which will lead to a cover. PICK: GEORGIA TECH -16
Northwestern @ Nevada -7 Sorry Keggers. Another national game here. Nevada will be geeked up for this one. Northwestern hasn't covered in the Western Time Zone in a couple years! PICK: NEVADA -7

You still owe me an explanation of "the spread" Mr. Marvin! OK vegas oddsmakers set a 'point spread' for almost any sport. In football, the favorite has to win by more than the point spread. For example: last week when West Virginia killed Maryland, they were favoried by 17 points, or -17. The final outcome was 45-24 West Virginia. WVU won by more than the point spread of 17 points. I win my bet because I pick WVU -17. Conversly, if you pick the other team, youa re given those points. Second example: Eastern Michagam played Northwestern last week. Northwestern was favored by 17.5 points (-17.5). I picked EMU +17.5. That means that EMU can lose by LESS than 17.5 points and I WIN my bet. The final score was Northwestern 14 EMU 6. EMU lost by 8 (within the 17.5 point spread) and WIN my bet. Hope this helps.

Definitely helps. Not sure I understand WHY that makes a difference though. Is it about skill of Team A vs Team B?

Patrick, that is correct. But in gambling, the're many overmatched teams that play each other and a point spread makes it tougher or the favorite to win people money.
Don't bet over your head!

Now I get it...
Not being a vegas betting kinda guy, I wasn't quite with you. Now it makes much more sense. It basically gives the underdog a more level playing field. Makes sense.

I'm not a real betting person either, but I'm still kicking myself for not betting on TX for the Nat'l Champ. last season... I had that feeling they were going to win all week!
And, the point spread is harder to think about if you're 1. not a gambler like me, or 2. just want to figure out who will win period. HOWEVER, the spread helped me win my bet on my team in the Sugar Bowl in '05!
Marvie - Are you sure UMD is favored over Florida? I thought Florida is ranked! That's what it looks like in your original post.
Go Yellowjackets! Good bet against the WaaaaaaHoos (as is waaambulance)!

Terps are playing Florida INTERNATIONAL University, not University of Florida or Florida State University.
FIU and FAU (Florida Atlantic) are usually in the bottom 19 of the 119 Division 1-A football teams.

Calvin Johnson is such a man beast. Didn't see the game, but saw his stat line. The reason GT lost to ND is cause they weren't throwing to him in the 2nd half.

He has go be a sure fire top ten pick this coming draft. I saw him last year tearing defenses up with the same passion. He will be the reason GT makes it to a bowl this year.

U of Cincy @ VT -27 Hokies are on a roll. What can Cincy bring to the table? They got smoked by #1 Ohio State 37-7. Same as last week. Cincy scores 10 points, I am screwed. PICK - HOKIES -27
Iowa State @ Texas -24.5 The line has been moving funny on this game. I will stick with my gut and go with the Longhorns. Boy, do I love chalk. Iowa St. just lost their big rivaly game to Iowa. There may be some after effects that Texas will capitalized on. PICK - TEXAS -24
Penn State @ Ohio State -17 Here is a game I can try to pick PSU. It is tough to go against OSU at home. OSU finially stopped the run when Cincy ran for -2 yards. MINUS TWO. PSU has a very decent rushing attack and for them to cover 17 points they will need to control the ball and the line of scrimmiage. PICK - NITTANY LIONS +17
FLA Int'l @ UMD -18 The line went down since I first posted. Shaky play has been worrisome. The Terps finially break out. They had some flashes against WVU at the end of the game. Let's hope that it carries over to bust up FLA Int'l. PICK - TERPS -18
Tulane @ LSU -36 A lot of points. You remember last week when Texas whipped Rice. Same concept. New whipping team. PICK - LSU -36
BONUS PICK (0-2) ND -2.5 @ Michigan St. High scoring games scare me. The over under is 57. Scoring in this game has gone up for 5 straight years. Not this time. Another spot where the Michigan St. will try, but fall to the Irish. PICK - NOTRE DAME -2.5

NFL Picks Skins -4 @ Houston I will take the bait. We cannot be this bad GO SKINS! PICK - SKINS -4
Giants @ Seahawks -3.5 Close game. Eli now has more confidence than ever leading a big comeback. I will take the points. PICK - GIANTS +3.5
Philly -6 @ San Fran San Fran is better than one thinks. Maybe I am going with my week one thought of Houston being better than what everyone thinks. That didn;t work for me last time. The SF offense will be there AND the Eagles are already feeling the injury bug with Kearse and a couple of secondary players hurt. PICK SF +6
