Hi everyone,
In my years as a division head referee and as a player volunteer ref, if an offensive player slowed up on purpose to make a fielder miss a ball, I called that runner out. It is a judgement call that a head referee has to make as all head referees have the final decision. I see it as unsportmanship conduct.
If the defensive player runs into the runner, as long as they are going for the ball it is allowed. Think of it in this situation, a pitcher throws the ball to the first baseman, it's a bad throw to the left, the 1st baseman leans into the baseline to make the play. This is legal too. As long as they player is making a play on the ball, it's legal. I know the WAKA rule book if far from perfect, but this is the way it's been called for years in regular games as well as the Founders and Presidents Cup tournaments.
To be fair though, I have e-mailed my WAKA contacts. (Even though I am a PT WAKA rep, the DC Star rep and part of the WAKA rules committee) Especially since I play in DC Star too, I should ask other WAKA reps.
Thanks!
Donnie

What it really comes down to is that luckily, the call was made in a game that ended 12-1 or so, and the calls had no outcome on the game. We'll get a ruling from WAKA (though Donnie seems to be on the ball with it anyway) and in future games we'll have this hashed out.

I'm just trying to get WAKA straightened out as it seems that there are tons of errors in their ways....but that's just the way things are with "new" "sports".
Adios muchachos!
