We really need more of that!
As an aside, exactly why is it that if the ball does hit someone on a bounce, if you throw it at a would-be base runner, is the person out? That just seems odd to me...

For the same reason the runner would be out if they tripped over their own kick while running to 1st... the ball is still live and in play when it hits the ground (unlike volleyball, dodgeball, etc). And in kickball, when you touch the ball, you're out... "intent" doesn't matter.

One of our players definately got himself out two seasons ago by putting enough spin on a kick that it bounced into him on his way to first. That was our pathetic Wacko highlight until my foul out in the 5th against Short Bus last year.

I think you misunderstand my point - given that many of the kickball rules are seemingly derived from baseball, it just seems odd that the ball essentially becomes a poison pill once it is "live".
And that begs the question - exactly at what point does the ball cease to be "live"?

I find it even funner when you chase someone with the ball rather than throwing it.. =) Esp when she screams bloody murder and runs in the complete wrong direction =) I <3 you Yellow Team.

Ok...so if I was rounding second and someone on the opposing team threw the ball back to the pitcher and the pitcher was on the mound, the ball becomes dead and I can continue to the next base knowing the ball is dead...?
Or does the ball spontaneously becomes live again when the pitcher tries to throw me out (as I continue around second), or does the very act of thowing the ball to the pitcher on the mound cease all play? Or does the ball become live once only when the pitcher actually pitches it and is kicked by the "batter"...?

well I know you can't steal bases, so if you're already rounding the base before s/he gets the ball you can go. If s/he trys to throw you out, and over throws it and it misses you (you jump over it or s/he's just that bad of aim) the ball is live again. (least that's what I've been told / saw)
I do know if the ball is overthrown and goes out in foul land, you can only take one base.
you can't move once the ball and pitcher are on the mound. no matter what. Once the ball is kicked you can, not sure if you can move once pitched but before kicked, that's a good question.

Thanks for the obnoxious scrolling green. My eyes are bleeding now. What rodeo said is mostly correct. It's more that the play is dead when the pitcher has the ball on the mound, and all runners are on a base. So if you had rounded 2nd, and then the pitcher got the ball on the mound... the play doesn't end until you go back to 2nd or he throws you out at 3rd At least that's how I understand it. There are also other ways a ball can be "dead" ( for example, if a runner kicks a ball already in play, not only are they out, but the play ends immediately. this is to prevent runners from sacrificing themselves and kicking the ball way out of play). P.S. Think of it more as the "play" being dead, not the "ball" being dead. The ball is dead when the play ends and stays dead till the next play begins.

unless they kick it twice while in the kicker box though (I think) I believe that's a foul then

So, to continue my role as devil's advocate, as long as I am not standing on a base at the same time that the ball is held by the pitcher (and vice-versa), play does not end.
So if I am standing on a base, and someone throws the ball to the pitcher, I can take off running for another base so long as I do so before the ball reaches the pitcher's hands, since play cannot end until all appropriate conditions are met (runner on a base and pitcher holding the ball while on the mound). Right?

unless they kick it twice while in the kicker box though (I think) I believe that's a foul then That rule is determined by the motion (and fair/foul territory). If the ball is kicked twice in one motion (aka double kick) its a foul. If the ball is kicked, and then kicked again in fair terriitory, the kicker is out. See rules 14.02 D and 15.02 in the WAKA rulebook
