I saw this on the WAKA main page and thought I would share it since people have had question on the rule and it comes into question quite often.. Especially during the playoffs when the game I was reffing had 2 instances called out.
The Ref's Corner TIP OF THE MONTH Here is a helpful style suggestion and rules clarification for the next time you don the red WAKA Kickball Ref shirt. At your next game take note that before the ball is kicked, if either the pitcher or any fielder is in front of the 1st-3rd diagonal, or the catcher comes out from behind the kicker, shout out "BALL!" loud enough for the kicker to hear. If the kicker takes the pitch, it's a ball, even if it's in the strike zone. If the kicker kicks anyway, the "ball" is irrelevant and the play counts. Taken from 8.02-8.04 in the Official Rules of the Game.

Yeah that came up at least twice in the Wackos/DBalls game and we brought it up as well. We talked about trying to get it changed to benefit the kicker more.
In both instances in our game, the "BALL" call was made with little time for the kicker to react even if they did hear it, and the ball was kicked into fair territory and resulted in an out. It doesnt really penalize the player crossing the line then because most times they are doing so because they expect the bunt, and then they are right there if the kicker doesnt react to the call fast enough.

I am amused that kickball is over. Done. Finished. And the questions still continue.

Speak for yourself Meeeshel, some of us (Sack Lunch in particular) still have games to play.

Fair enough, but I doubt that Sack Lunch is looking to the message boards to have all of their kickball questions answered. So... I will continue to be amused at the fact that the questions continue because for every other team in our little division, the season is over.

I'm still playing GO TailGators!!!! I think some of the head refs from Star might get pulled in to ref the playoffs as well. But I do see where you are coming from. Still I'm always happy to know these things, and was not aware of that rule until Sunday. Good to know because I'm sure I'll get roped into some reffing next season.

I just posted the rule since it came up in the playoff game I was reffing (Wackost/DB as indicated) and going forward, I thought it would be helpful if the rule was clear to everyone.. i assume people will play kickball in spring..
Scotty, It is a crappy rule for the kicker. Not much can be done.. except maybe if they change it along the lines of the 'kick in front of plate' rule (which also happens really fast) where the ball is live if kicked, and defense can catch the ball for out.. but otherwise its foul and the kicker kicks again. I dunno, I didn't make the rules, I just try to interpret them....

i didnt even realize you had reffed our game...way to pay attention Scott.
I think the game was well called by the refs, but that the rule itself needs to be looked at. For teams with a fast pitcher, you cant react to that ball call in time. Perhaps if it was just an automatic ball regardless of where or if it were kicked. It just seems that even though the fielder is breaking the rules, they have a better chance of benefiting from the call.
Anyway something that probably just gets mentioned to the higher ups and hopefully is looked into and changed.

I'm an ass. I didn't bother to look that the initial question was posted by Sack Lunch. Nevermind. I retract my earlier statement. I just assumed this was another random question thread.

We had a discussion about this rule at the board meeting last night with our WAKA rep. It's a completely f'ed up rule for the kicker. It's not like there are a million other things going on to distract the kicker, let alone one of the refs yelling "BALL" as you extend your foot. There needs to be some other word to call, or the play just needs to be called back giving the kicker a click on the ball counter or something.

Wrote Rachel about getting WAKA to look into the rule. If nothing changes, we can always tweak it to suit our division come spring. Just hafta remember to notify all teams/refs and realize that it wouldn't be the case come regional playoffs for whoever wins.

Encroachment and continuing play: Rules 8.02 and 8.03 involve the referee calling “ball” when a fielder plays forward the first-third base diagonal. When a referee calls “encroachment” the play is automatically a ball and the play is dead, regardless of how the kicker plays the ball.
That is from the WAKA newsletter, seems to solve our problem, or at least leaves it to the refs discretion.
