Agreed! (Even though we disagree) Let's see what the WAKA lords say.

I think it comes down to the interpretation of "behind the strip" when it says that the pitcher must remain behind it. This could mean either within the "width of the strip" or "not in front of it"... which i think is what you two are arguing over.
Frankly, i'd go with the "don't be an ass" interpretation and leave that decision up to the head ref. 2-3 ft to the side... cool. 12 ft to the side... ass.
But if forced into a more official decision... i think that if rule 8.06 ("no restrictions on pitching style... as long as it's pitched by hand") is to be believed, then the pitcher can run zig-zags and release anywhere on the mound as long as: 1) they stay on the mound 2) they stay behind the 1st-3rd line until the ball is kicked
Also keep in mind it's a 12' radius, so although you could end up 12' to the left, you'd have to run a diagonal route to get out there when starting 12' back (it's not explicity stated, but it's implied that stepping off the mound is like stepping out of the batters box).

hmm.. very true taylor.. so being in the middle of the mound is why you get a better pitch.. If it becomes a huge problem =p I'll be VERY OCD and paint a elipse on the mound lol =p (kidding)

wow, didn't mean to start a huge thread on this, but here are my thoughts. When i think of the kickball rules, i like to think of baseball. When a baseball pitcher is pitching, he must keep a foot on the pitcher's plate. Thus, i think the proper rule for pitching a kickball is that at least part of your body should be behind the pitcher's plate when you release the ball. It could be your left leg if you want, but in a straight line back from the plate towards second base, some part of your body should be in there.
Otherwise like i said, i don't think it's fair to be pitching from even 3 feet off to the side. that just gives you that much more of an advantage on throwing the ball in at some weird angle. I think if everyone is behind the pitcher's plate, it would be fairer for everyone.

also, i thought the 12' radius thing was just the radius the pitcher had to be in with the ball in order for the runners to stop running around the bases. and the 12 foot thing for pitching the ball was saying how far back the pitcher could start running from to pitch the ball

I e-mailed two WAKA reps, including ours, one of my best friends Michelle, and their "boss" Marisa, our regional rep. I copied Shelby and Taylor..............hopefully we'll have an answer soon! There clearly needs to be a clarification to all of our clarifications. But until there is, we all will continue to disagree. Don't we all love kickball!?!?

That was exactly MY thinking when I read the pitching rules. And it's been said that our rules are based on softball rules, so I would assume that if our rules don't explicitly say something, clarifications are based on 1) the rules of similar games (i.e. softball, baseball) or 2) the ruling of the WAKA Rules Gods... It will be interesting to see what Marisa and Michelle come up with.
