Ok so last night, DC Royal playoffs. Rule in question.
When the ball hits a player on a pitch, but the player has made no attempt at the ball, what is the call?
The ref in our game said that any contact with the ball is either a foul or in play. We have some fast pitchers in that division, so you cant always get out of the way. When you watch the ball bouce up off a girls hip and she gets caught out, or a player "fouls out" and has made no attempt on the ball, it gets frustrating.
The calling was fair across the board, and the ref even said its a terrible rule and should be changed.
So long story, how would DC Star refs call that?

If it's above the knee it is a foul, I believe, but don't know if catching it would count as an out.
If it's below, I would imagine, even without intent, it is fair.
I'll leave it to Taylor and Erin to give better advice, I don't have my rules handy.

Yeah but its rough when you make no attempt at the ball or are even attempting to dodge it, and you get called for a foul.

Shouldn't the call be made when the ball reaches the plate. I would make the call ball or strike if there was no attempt made. IF there was then go by patrick's interpretation. This is where the umps need to know this type of stuff.

Crappy situation. I would probably call it as the DC Royal ref did. Kinda like in baseball, if the batter were to duck out of the way of an errant pitch, but the ball knicked his bat in the process... it would be in play.

I probably would too Marvin, but like I said last night that was not the case, and it was a very strict adherence to WAKA rules I think. I'm just looking for the Star interpretation so I know.

I just read the rules, and that is pretty hardcore. It would be the batters responsibility to step away from the plate or risk fouling the ball. Since we discussed the question I am sure Star would uphold that also.

Yeah but have you seen some of the pitchers in other leagues? Vo does a pretty hard pitch, and I hear Sack Lunch's pitcher. Its not easy to avoid the ball when you are moving up for a kick.

Haha good point Leslie, shall I start a new thread asking Annie to teach us all the ways to avoid the kickball?

Haha good point Leslie, shall I start a new thread asking Annie to teach us all the ways to avoid the kickball? Leslie told me that there was some poking fun at me going on.... There really is no technique to flat out avoiding the ball. It's pure instinct. Not all of us have it, but those that do just know that when that ball is coming towards you, it's time to scream and flail.

hmmm see I thought the key was in the flail, so now after spending the last week practicing my flailing in front of the mirror, you're telling me it was all for naught?
That saddens me.

I mean, I guess you could practice it, but that may not work Scotty. See, in the heat of the moment, it really comes down to the question: are you going to try and catch it or are you actually afraid of the ball? And that's where the flailing nature comes from.

If only I could control where I kick the ball....
Any advice on the original reffing call that started this post Taylor?
