"Now if I could just get the first basepeople to keep out of the way of my baseline runners..." Hmmmmmmmm, sounds like the "second" first base wasn't such a bad idea last season!?!? Should we bring it back? NO.

I still would veto the 2nd 1st base. It is the runner's and fielders responsibilities to provide each other with room to make plays. Runners need to learn that they cannot always run in a straight line. Fielders need to learn to step off the base to get overthrown balls and not try to stretch so much. Or....if you can't take being tackled at first....don't play first. It WILL happen sometimes. And no one does it on purpose...I assume. And this goes for everyone. I've seen guys knocked down by girls, guys by guys, girls by guys, etc. What's next....double 2nd, 3rd and home plates? I've slid into bases plenty of times and had people fall on me. Its part of the game. Frickin' well said, Flava!!! Flaming Adam took out one of the first basemen this weekend. And I know Nelson took out Pudge at third last season when we played Short Bus. All these rules "adjustments" are just necessary due to the fact that no one upholds the rules we already have...

Should we look into buying more real bases? Or buying a set and have each field have a raised first base? I'm all for raised bases. Even if it's just for first.

hmm.. isn't it true that if a fielder interferes with a runner the runner is safe? Nope, not true. Well, partially true. The fielder is allowed in the base path IF AND ONLY IF to make a play on the ball. In the case of Wackos vs. Flame On, the fielders were making a play on the ball on all cases when people were complaining. As they had rookies on first, their coordination of making a play was a little rough, but they had a right to be where they were. This means that collisions WILL continue to happen and the rules allow them to happen. In all honesty, the game perfectly highlighted where a 2nd first base comes in handy... which is why I found it ironic that the flamers were going ballistic over someone being in their way when they are the team most vehemently against having a 2nd bag. Yes, in a picture perfect world you shouldn't need one. But we play in a league where 1/2 the people will never know every rule (just look at how many don't realize they can't overrun 2nd), so you can't expect 1st to always be free. And the reason we only add a second bag at 1st is because 90% of the plays happen there AND it's where runners are running at full speed since you can overrun it.

I've never ran over anyone at first.. grant it I hardly ever make it there =p but when I do I always run to the right of person esp if I see them in my way, or to the left if I see space. I've never had a problem. then again, I'm not a linebacker =) I try to avoid gettin hurt =p I'd rather get out than deal with a broken thumb or a sliced leg from sliding

I was a linebacker in HS and college....cant say I've ever run someone over on first...
Now second base is a different story, and whats this talk about not being able to overrun it!

I think Scotty said it right and anybody who is the head ref should be smart enough to determine intent. It really is all in the follow thru.
As far as the 2 base goes, I have a softball league that regularly uses the second base and it is helpful. Not to mention that the bases we use aren't that big in the first place and anybody with a shoe size about 9 is going to cover almost the entire thing.
Marvin I have to say that the first time there was an issue at first it was brought up calmly and Scotty said he would take care of it. It was the second and third time that it happened that was the upsetting part. That being said, I think we did go a little over the top about it so I apologize. And Troy is right that collisions will still happen and it is a part of the game. I haven't been in that situation as of yet and everybody should thank the stars that my fat ass hasn't run into them but sometimes shite just happens.
Oh and I still have to point out that if the 8 year old versions of ourselves were to listen to us now then they would be laughing at us for making so many rules on such a simple game.

1. Token, please use the numbering system... it's exhausting to read paragraphs on a msg. board. 2. I'm a big fan of the second first base... I've collide a number of times, and got fairly seriously hurt one time... we're talking bruising all down my leg and swelling in my ankle. I looked hot. 3. I haven't reffed a game yet this season, but yes, man bunting is going to be a judgement call, but, I think everyone is right in determing whehter the dude was actually going to wind up and nail it and miss vs. a little dink.

I have reffed 1.67 games. For my money, making the announcement at the beginning reminding of the man bunt thing has been rather helpful.
Token, thanks for understanding. I have been in a few run-ins. It is part of the game and maybe it should be another point of emphasis to mention before the game starts.

How does one do that? 2) Announcing rules and reminders at the beginning is a TERRIFIC IDEA! 3) Don't get me wrong. I don't want anyone hurt. I just want people to follow the rules. It's like what republicans always claims about things like gun control... we make too many new laws to make up for not enforcing the ones we already do have. 4) In my previous post I neither condoned nor excuse gun control or either party's misinterpretation of the Second Amendment. 5) I'll vote for a replay of the Second 1st Base Rule if it comes up again. 6) Anwilli, this bullet is just for you. 7) I'm up way too early. I hate that my new job is so far away!

I have therefore head reffed .33 games and luckily the only possible bunt I saw went foul and I warned the kicker not to make me have to make that call.
On to the first base to hopefully put it to rest. 1.) Donna (usual first baseman) was in Maine for the weekend
A.) Yes we made a mistake, we put a rookie on first that we believe knew what he was doing...he did not and Flame On had multiple runners get on because he had no hands, you should probably have been thanking us. Said Rookie will be showing up early this weekend to learn the ropes.
&.) The rookies were warned, adjustments were made, but its also an experience thing. It will come with time and the base is small.
?) As Head ref Taylor stated "In the case of Wackos vs. Flame On, the fielders were making a play on the ball on all cases when people were complaining. As they had rookies on first, their coordination of making a play was a little rough, but they had a right to be where they were."
$) Will this "numbering system" piss off Anwilli?

1.67 is one game plus reffing about 2/3 of another game before I respectfully left to get out of the sun. I paid a dear price Sunday. FYI, thank you TIO & HFB for understanding. Scott took over in my place.

$. I can see Patrick's point about not enforcing the rules we have vs. coming up with new ones, but let's face it... we're not pros by any means.... or some of us may not even be athletes, so the second first base isn't a HORRIBLE idea... it's for safety. #. Patrick - don't complain about your job being far away.... go talk to scoots or come see me about jobs being far away from home and fun stuff. %. Thank you all for the numbering system. I appreciate order and organization. @. And, Scotty's system doesn't bother me... yet.
