Basically, the RAND(); function that Justin used to generate that list of teams isn't truely random. It's what's called a pseudo-random number generator. The numbers are computed from a mathematical formula or simply taken from a precalculated list. Modern algorithms are very good and they make the numbers look like they are really random, but utimately they are predictable. That means they can be predicted if you know where in the sequence the first number is taken from.
Like the site says: True random numbers are typically generated by sampling and processing a source of entropy outside the computer. Entropy can come from pretty much any natural source. A radioactive source is a very good source of entropy. How long it takes to decay is completely unpredictable.
However, this site uses the background radio noise in the Earth's atmosphere to generate random numbers. Either a 0 or a 1.

Why not just put the names on pieces of paper and pick them out of a hat? Isn't that more random than the algorithms you're refering to?

MattAllen, I'll agree you're a dork. I don't think we have to discuss that part. But, for those of us that were English majors in college, could either you or the Lady of the Flame please translate that into non-dorkspeak, please? Because English majors certainly aren't dorks...(and I say this while ducking and fully admitting that I too, was an English major).

We be not dorks, but beatnicks! <actually since I started reading the Canterbury Tales in olde english again and have it with me right now, I think I could qualify for dork status...>

It might not be rigged, but RAND() is hardly random. If you want a truely random list of numbers go to: random.org/From the site: True random numbers are typically generated by sampling and processing a source of entropy outside the computer. That site's just a piece of crap trying to sell people random numbers that are somehow cooler than other people's random numbers. Look, so long as RAND() draws numbers along a continuous range of [0,1] from a uniform distribution within discrete 0.1 intervals, we're fine. For the nonrandomness of RAND() to be an issue, we'd need 10^10, or at least 10! (i.e., 10 x 9 x 8 x 7...) players in the FFL league, or have the need to redraw from the distribution that many times...and there aren't that many players in the NFL. So, in English: RAND() is close enough. That being said, I wish we were able to have a 10-way flip cup death match to determine draft position...just seems more appropriate. And how did we get on a random conversation about random numbers anyway? Seems too ironic...

<doing his best Miss Scarlett from Clue imitation...> Who are you? Albert Einstien?? You quoted Miss Scarlett from Clue!!! And please, Einstein couldn't hang with my flipcup skills. Theory of Relativity? Yeah, relatively one-and-done, Al! Can we draft so we can start the trash talking...because that's really the only reason I joined.
