Fifty years ago, all of us at Engadget weren't even a glimmer in our mothers' eyes -- in fact, now that we think about it probably most of our parents hadn't even met yet. By that logic, it's hard for us to imagine a world without hard drives, which were born 50 years ago today, back on September 13, 1956. On that fateful day IBM created the original -- called the RAMAC 305 -- which held around 5 MB of data at the cost of $10,000 per megabyte, and was the size of two refrigerators. By 1980, Big Blue had one-upped itself with the introduction of the first one gigabyte hard drive, which was half the physical size, weighed 550 pounds, and cost only $40,000. Flash forward to 2006, where the fingernail-size microSD card kicking around in our cell phones and cameras these days (albeit not a hard drive) now costs about $10 per gigabyte -- gotta love the march of technology. By that logic, we should have a new type of terabyte storage device to carry around by about 2056, probably embedded in our bodies and hard-wired to our brains. www.engadget.com/2006/09/13/hard-drives-turn-50-today/

haha possibly but we're also running out of ways to shrink the stuff...for now anyway. Though I do recall reading something about them testing new ways to record info aside from a magnetic drive.

shrink stuff? what you talkin bout. Bigger is better esp with files!
There are the optical cards that can hold several terabytes *moan* but the actual reader for the cards (which are dirt cheap) is in the several thousands range. damn media is cheap! but the reader isn't!

I mean actual physical size not storage capacity. I don't know if in 2056 I want a 3.5" HD in my leg or whatever

Even more importantly, September 13th is the birthday of the Hershey's Chocolate Kiss. Screw the hard drive, give me the CHOCOLATE!!
AND... you'd have no need for your hard drive, if George Henderson hadn't invented the typewriter ribbon on this day (09/14) in 1886!
AND... Derek Hewlett was born on this cold, snowy day in 1981.
AND... The Waltons premiered on CBS on this day in 1972.
Good night, John Boy... Good night, Mary Ellen... Good night, Grandpa... Good night, Elizabeth... Good night, TBWRC...
