Ah but there's also the question of the necessity of evil? Such as in the matrix where they tried to make a matrix where nothing bad happened and the human mind couldn't handle it.
A great fantasy book I read was "Villains by Necessity" There was the ultimate war between good and evil and good won, but the problem is that the world is too good. Animals aren't dying, days are too long, etc. so a group of villains sets out to save the world from being too good.
Then you also have the idea of needing evil to set those apart as good, because how can one tell who is good when you have nothing to compare against? Or could it just be a clash of perspectives?
oh s.hit, now I've gone and exposed myself as a thinker...

My vote is based on the musical. I started reading the book before I saw it and just couldn't get into it. I got about halfway through, saw the musical (which I just LOVED even though I saw a very mediocre cast) and never started again. But you really liked it Patrick? i liked it also. it presents good arguments about the nature of evil, and i different perspective of that old oz story.

Just out of curiosity... how many of you reading and resonding read any of the original Oz series? I mean, even the first book. The book was obviously very different from the movies (sliver shoes, Glinda's kiss, etc.).

Problem is I don't think it's in print anymore but amazon seems to have a good amount of sellers, just not for the original listed price of $6.99 or whatever. And if I was playin dumb to get chicks I must've been doing it totally wrong cause it didn't work.

negative, a 4 hour drive to see some dead guys house never really occured to me (unless its THE house from the movie complete with retractable witches legs, then I missed out). Not that I knew he lived there until I read your post anyway.
