It finally looks like DC is shaking off its old image and finally putting the Barry days behind us.

I thought Fenty was supposed to be the 2nd coming of Barry? I thought he wanted to reverse course on all the downtown revitalization and put all the money towards the poor? And going even more anti-commuter. Maybe I'm wrong.
I would've gone for Cropp, even though I didn't like her because of the anti-baseball stuff. I think the 3rd person (the ex-CEO) would have been the best, but didn't really have a chance. I feel like the city has been on a good track, so why mess with it.

From my standpoint, the places I've lived in the city, and watching what's going on here, I don't think it's a bad move by the DC Residents. Fenty is no Barry, believe me.
There is over-development in the downtown and what some would consider richer areas of the city. It's time to slow things down there and let the poorer wards catch up. We still lack many city services in Wards 5-8. We still lack decent policing in Wards 5-8. We still lack simple things like grocery stores in Wards 5-8. We lack dry cleaners, coffee shops, restaurants, gyms, bars, donut shops (build them and the cops will come!) in Wards 5-8.
I'm not aware of Fenty's anti-commuter stance, but I wouldn't blame him if he had it. Commuters come into the city, use services, and benefit from the backs of those of us that live and pay taxes here. That was not a big deal when the city was receiving a federal payment to make up for that loss, but with the lack of ability to institute a "commuter tax," DC residents are supporting those commuters.
I would have voted for Cropp just for her stand on baseball. She's not anti-baseball, she was for slowing down the process and not having, again, the residents of the city bare the brunt of the cost when many in the city will not be able to afford to attend games, etc.
I vote for Fenty becuase I think DC is need of a charismatic leader. I don't think for the first time in years that this was a "lesser of evils" vote as it has been in the past. Either of these three candidates would be an excellent choice for DC. It came down to a matter of personality and leadership style, and what I felt could be accomplished with those characteristics.
And Marie Johns (the former verizon CEO) will be a better candidate in four years if she stays involved in DC politics rather than fading into the woodwork.
Just my thoughts.

Hooray for Charismatic leaders! You know, I purposely avoided that word as it was used to describe Marion many many years ago...

Hooray for Charismatic leaders! You know, I purposely avoided that word as it was used to describe Marion many many years ago... Yeah well Charismatic has also been a "virtue" attributed to many others - such as Bill Clinton, Tom Cruise, A certain Christian movement, and Jeffrey Dahmer- but that doesn't make it bad.

I don't buy the anti-commuter sentiment. If it weren't for commuters, tourists, and VA/MD residents, I wonder whether the city could support itself. The growth within the city cannot be separated from the growth within Northern VA and MD. We may not pay income taxes, but we still pay sales tax and metro fares. When employed by city businesses, we help them make their products which are then sold for sales tax and business income tax. We buy those same products for the same ends. We bring the fans to the stadiums to help them recoup the building cost and patronize the local businesses nearby.

Hooray for Charismatic leaders! You know, I purposely avoided that word as it was used to describe Marion many many years ago... And Bush. Feline pointed out 'charismatic' has resulted in both good and bad. Which is precisely why trumpeting it may not be a good criteria for gauging a candidate. <sorry for double post>
