[FYI. Copied from a WAKA rep post on kickball365.com. Bolding is from me. Apparently we are currently a bit off from the standards being put in place. yeah, waka never officially sent guidance on this, but it's something to look at for the future and a lot of them make sense]
I'm WAKA's Manager for the West Coast, and this thread was brought to my attention since I've been trying to synchronize the record-keeping policies of various Divisions with each other as well as with WAKA Events staff who harvest these records in order to seed tourneys such as Founders Cup. With this thread you can see just how hard a project this is, since there's a wide variety of misunderstandings and bad assumptions being practiced throughout the WAKA-verse.
Here is the skinny on the correct practices and policies currently in place.
- Forfeits should NEVER be waived by an agreement amongst captains. It will always lead to controversy, irony, and usually disaster. Just take the forfeit gracefully, play an honor scrimmage with whoever is there, and then go drink.
- "Points" in the Division Standings are awarded as follows: Win = 2, Tie = 1, Loss = 0, Forfeit = -1. Yes, you lose a point for forfeiting a game, and also for a "paper forfeit" such as might be levied per division policy (e.g. for failing to supply a Ref when scheduled).
- A forfeited game counts as a Win for the non-forfeiting team, and a Loss + Forfeit for the forfeiting team.
- NO SCORE should be recorded for a forfeited game - rather it is not counted as a Game Played.
At this point, allow me to reference the WAKA World Championship Guidelines, seen here: www.kickball.com/WORLD_KICKBALL_CHAMPIONSHIP_GUIDELINES_2007.pdf
The tiebreak structure contained there serves for both the Divisional and Tournament level - and you will notice that Run Differential is NOT an official WAKA tiebreak factor. Divisions that keep track of RD to so purely for their own amusement - it is not considered for Tourney seeding at this time, nor should it be used to break ties in the standings of Divisions.
So what is the tiebreak factor? Well, once you get past head-to-head records and record-against-common-opponents, the operative factor is... RUNS ALLOWED PER GAMES PLAYED.
Therefore: When a game is forfeited, both teams will have one fewer "Game Played" to divide their "Runs Allowed" by.
It's not a 1-0 score or a 5-0 score, it's no score at all - but you have to keep track of the # of games played, since otherwise there's no way to tell at a glance how many of a team's Wins came via forfeit.
Those of you involved with keeping division standings current on your website or newsletter, I urge you to track Games Played for each team - it'll make it MUCH easier to break your ties properly, as well as to seed your winners when it comes time to qualify them for a WAKA Tournament!
